SHOW AND TELL

Use the suitcase as an opportunity for each camper to create something special that truly represents them.

Start with collaging the outside with images that represent things they love and places they want to go. Nat Geo kids is a great and affordable magazine option that provides excellent collaging photos for cutting and pasting on the outside of their suitcase. You can also print a variety of images online. Print a lot! The search for the things that most represent you is part of the fun.

Inside, have them “pack three things” that represent what is most important to them. They can make these items out of everyday craft supplies like air dry clay, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, etc.

Once complete, give each camper a turn to present the suitcase that represents them and share where in the world they would like to go next.

THE STORY OF YOU

Adapt this class so that it better celebrates personal expression through storytelling.

Start with prompts that encourage campers to tell stories about their own lives. Things like:

  • Tell us something funny that happened to you this week
  • What is your favorite thing to do with your best friend
  • What is your favorite story
  •  Do you remember something that scared you before? What happened?

Together you will choose one or several of these stories to bring to life through improv and play. As a group, you’ll build a simple script, find props, assign roles, and find other silly ways to reenact the memories they shared as a group. Both counselors and campers can participate!!

CAMPERS GOT TALENT

Dedicate an entire day to preparing for a talent show that campers can perform for their parents. Include parents and other associates in the audience come showtime!

The first half of the day can be dedicated to learning a new talent or practicing one they are excited about. Create counselor-led stations to learn some popular talents. Talents might include:

  • A circus trick
  • A comedy routine
  • A magic trick
  • Performing in a band
  • Singing a song
  • Performing a dance
  • A physical skill, like walking the balance beam

After kids have chosen their special talent, spend the second half of the day stringing together the show, rehearsing and preparing for the open curtain!

For kids who do not want to perform, give them other special tasks like: organizing the props, building the set, creating a playbill or show tickets, and setting up the theatre.

For cultural fun, create an annual calendar of celebrations that represent the local community. These can be aligned with existing holidays or make up your own!  Celebrate the families who are at the end of their trip, and welcome the new ones!

These celebrations are an opportunity to educate and excite families around the importance of local music, art, food and dance.

They should include:

  • Cultural food and education on any ingredients or recipes with a story
  • Activity stations that allow families to create art that mimics local art
  • Live musical performances
  • Decoration that represents the culture and makes it feel like a special night
  • FUN FIRST storytelling, again tied back to local culture
