Counselor(s) prep (30 minutes before)

Doors open (5 minutes before)

Gather (right on time)

  • When all children are seated, welcome everyone!
  • Introduce yourself and any other Counselors assisting the activity
  • Give children a brief overview of what to expect and show children a completed “demo” or what the final product of this craft can look like
  • Briefly review the tools they’ll be using and highlight any tools/techniques that require either (1) special care or (2) direct Counselor intervention
    • E.g. “Scissor edges can be sharp, so take care to always grab them by their handles and set them down gently every time!”

Icebreaker (5 minutes)

  • We’re going to play "Nice to Meet Ya!"
  • Instruct all children and Counselors to sit in a circle
  • Go around the circle having each participant tell everyone their name and their favorite song
  • Counselors can go first to set an example for children

Craft (25 minutes)

  1. DIY Tambourines:
    1. Punch 8 holes around the rim of one of the plates
    2. Flip the plate upside down on top of the other plate and mark where each of the holes would be on the second plate
    3. Punch corresponding holes on the 2nd plate
    4. Decorate the outsides (bottoms) of both plates using tape and markers on the outsides of each
    5. When the designs are ready, lay the first plate outside-side-down on the table, add a spoonful of pebbles in the plate
    6. Glue or tape the plates together by the inner rims - line up the holes and then press the edges to seal your instrument shut!
    7. Cut pipe cleaners in half
    8. Thread a pipe cleaner through each hold and twist a few times
    9. Add a bell onto each pipe cleaner and twist a few more times before tucking the pipe cleaner under
  1. Rainstick/ Shaker:
  • Wrap the paper towel tube with colorful tape, folding the tape ends onto themselves, and leaving some stripes open to color in
  • Cut 2 round pieces of paper from your paper bag big enough to cover the ends of your rainstick
  • Cover one end and secure with a rubber band and hide the rubber band under more colorful tape
  • Add 1 spoonful of rice into the tube
  • Loosely wrap two pipe cleaners around a finger to create a spiral and insert them both into your rainstick
  • Cover the other end with the second paper circle - secure with a rubber band and tape.
  • Tie a few bells onto a 6-inch string.  Repeat to create 2.
  • Tie each bell string around the tape on either end of your rainstick - trim any excess string

Play/ Perform (10 minutes)

  • Time to fully jam out and bring the house down by making some NOISE!
  • Put together a head-banging, kid friendly rock and roll playlist. Get the music started and use your instruments to sing, dance, and play!
  • Let kids take turns with a solo, play “follow that rhythm”, or create a marching band

Wrap-Up/ Goodbyes (5 minutes)

Reset/ Clean-Up (After - 10 minutes)
