Counselor(s) Prep (30 minutes before)

Doors Open (5 minutes before)

Gather (right on time)

  • When all children are seated, welcome everyone!
  • Introduce yourself and any other Counselors assisting the activity
  • Give children a brief overview of what to expect and show children a completed “demo” or what the final product of this craft can look like
  • Briefly review the tools they’ll be using and highlight any tools/techniques that require either (1) special care or (2) direct Counselor intervention
    • E.g. “Scissor edges and compass points can be sharp, so take care to always grab them by their handles and set them down gently every time!”

Icebreaker (5 minutes)

  • We’re going to play Nice to Meet Ya!
  • Instruct all children and Counselors to sit in a circle
  • Go around the circle having each participant tell everyone their name and their favorite color.
  • Counselors can go first to set an example for children

Craft (25 minutes)

  1. Choose two pieces of paper (choose a color for the exterior of your card, and choose white or a light color for the base of your pop-up shape) and fold them both in half widthwise.

  2. On the paper for your pop-up shape, trace the pattern you want to use:some text
    • For a spiral shape, use scissors to cut the prepared circles - start from the edge working your way inward and around to create the spiral.
      • Fun Tip: Cut a wiggly line if you want to get wacky!
    • For a butterfly, draw one half of a butterfly adjacent to the folded edge of your paper, and then use scissors to cut it out. When unfolded, you’ll have your butterfly
  3. Use markers to add patterns and color to both sides of your pop-up shape
    • Protect the table underneath with a piece of blank paper
  4. Stick the shape to your card:
    • Open the card and decide where you want the pop-up to sit
    • Use adhesive to affix it to the card:
      • For spirals: tape/ glue one end of the spiral to one side of the card and the other end of the spiral to the opposite side, close the card, and press flat to adhere
      • For butterflies: apply tape down the middle of the butterfly, line up the butterfly fold with the inside fold of your card, and press to adhere
  5. Make it extra!
    • Use markers, stickers, etc. to add beautiful designs

Play/ Perform (10 minutes)

  • Instruct children to think about someone they might want to give or send their card to and help them write a short message for the recipient.  Help them sign their name and close the card with a sticker.

Wrap-up/ Goodbyes (5 minutes)
